The Prescription Check Process

Our optometrists here at EyeMax EyeCare take time and care when assessing your current vision. An eye prescription is made by a subjective test, where you will be required to answer a series of yes or no questions. This means it is a good idea to be alert and focused when you are coming into your appointment. During your visit, they will typically look at:

  • Your current prescription
  • Any changes in your vision since your last eye exam
  • Past eye health and optical correction history
  • Family history of eye conditions, diseases and prescriptions
  • Your lifestyle needs and how you use your glasses (E.g., If you do a lot of computer work, need Prescription Safety Glasses or Sport and Recreational Glasses, etc.)
  • Any other issues present that could be impacting your vision, such as eye conditions and diseases

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What are the different types of prescriptions?

Everyone’s eyes are completely different and unique. This means that nearly all prescriptions will differ from person to person. Eye prescriptions can be hard to decipher and usually contain an assortment of numbers and letters that are used by our optometrist, optical dispensers, and optical assistants to create your glasses. The most simplistic way to understand is:

    • Nearsighted or myopia makes distant objects appear blurry or distorted – ‘Sphere’ is a Minus (-) lens.

    • Farsightedness or hyperopia is an inability to focus on objects up close – ‘Sphere’ is a Plus (+) lens.

    • Astigmatism is a common vision condition caused by an error in the shape of the cornea and resulting in blurred vision and difficulty seeing at night – ‘Cyl’ and ‘Axis’.

    • Reading ‘Add’ is an extra lens power added to make it easier for you to read.

  • How long will it take me to adjust to my new prescription glasses?

All new prescription glasses require some time to adjust to, so staying patient and calm is the easiest way to do so. Single vision near or distance glasses are the simplest prescription types and are easy to adjust to but will still take some getting used to, especially if you have had a large prescription change. When updating multifocal prescriptions, adjustment time is especially true as it can take from a few days to a few weeks, which is totally normal, especially with large prescription changes. Putting your new glasses on in the morning for a few hours and increasing the time over a few days is the easiest way to adjust to your new prescription.

Prescription Assessed with Irlen Syndrome

Here at EyeMax Eyecare we are affiliated with the Irlen Syndrome Clinic in Wallsend. Irlen Syndrome is a visual processing disorder, which can have similar symptoms to those of dyslexia. These symptoms can be alleviated or removed by specifically tinted Irlen lenses worn as glasses that can be combined with your prescription.

Our optometrists and staff are knowledgeable in the condition and consider your tinting needs within the eye examination. When booking an appointment, please bring in your coloured overlay and let the receptionist know that you have Irlen Syndrome so we can best understand you and your eye care needs. Our staff will also make sure we select the correct lens type that is able to be tinted by the Irlen Clinic. We have over 1000 frames to choose from to mix and match with your tint colour along with a wide selection of kids and tween frames.

We do not tint your Irlen lenses, but we take your prescription lenses to the Irlen Clinic for them to be on-sent for tinting. It can take around 3-4 weeks for your glasses to be fully completed but once reassembled we will notify you that they are ready to collect.

*(We do not assess or test for Irlen Syndrome)*
