At EyeMax EyeCare, we believe prevention is the best medicine for eye health, and that's why we offer retinal photography as part of our comprehensive eye examinations. Retinal Photography or digital retinal imaging uses high-resolution imaging systems to capture images of the inside and back of your eye. This helps your optometrist to assess the health of the retina and to detect and manage eye conditions and diseases.
The test takes no longer than five minutes and is easy to complete with no additional steps required. Retinal Photography is included as a part of our pre-testing before your actual eye examination and is a standard procedure for all patients here at EyeMax EyeCare.
Located in Wallsend, Newcastle our centre caters for patients throughout Newcastle, Nelson Bay and Gosford. Call

When you are having retinal photography done, we first adjust the machine for your own comfortability asking you to then place your chin in the designated chin rest with your forehead flush against the forehead rest.
Next we will ask you to focus on a few dots as we align the camera to your eye. It is important that you remain still during the process to ensure clear and detailed images are captured. Once everything is set up, we will capture the photo and you will see a bright flash of light. We will then get you to look at the dots again for the other eye repeating the process.
If you have any questions during or before the test, feel free to ask any questions and our team will explain the process in more detail.
Retinal Photography is a routine assessment that is a part of your test. This allows your optometrist to observe how your eyes change when you are having regular eye examinations.
Retinal Photography is most import for those who have Diabetes, Macular Degeneration, Glaucoma and other eye conditions.
Our team is always available to ask question about the process and will try our best to provide detailed explanations to help you understand the importance of retinal photography.
No, retinal photography is a completely painless test and there should be little to no discomfort associated with the process. People who are light sensitive may feel slight discomfort for a few seconds when the photo is taken due to the bright flash of light but does not cause any other irritation.
Retinal Photography only takes <5 minutes to complete.
Introduced to Australia in the early 2000s, retinal photography is able to detect small changes in the back of your eye that would otherwise go unnoticed during a traditional eye exam. As such, it's often used as an important part of preventative care to ensure potential issues are identified and treated early
Retinas are the light-sensitive layer or tissue in the back of the eye. They are responsible for receiving and processing the light that enters the eyes and what allows us to see clearly. Retinal photography looks at the macular and optic disc alongside the veins and arteries in the eyes that contribute to the eye’s overall health.
Retinal photography can provide an invaluable record of your eye health, enabling us to detect subtle and drastic changes over time that may not be visible with traditional eye examinations such as:
- Early signs of eye diseases
- Abnormalities in the retina, lens and optic nerve
- Retinal detachment or degeneration
- Macular degeneration
- Glaucoma
- Cataracts
At EyeMax EyeCare, our team are trained to perform professional retinal photography for all patients to help monitor ongoing eye health.
